AIFC signs MoU with FCA for the development of Football in India and Australia

On 27th August 2020, the Association of Indian Football Coaches (AIFC) and Football Coaches Australia(FCA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) to support the development of football in both India and Australia.

Ericsson & UNICEF Partnered to Map School Internet Connectivity in 35 Countries

On 26th August 2020, Ericsson, Swedish Telecom Company, partnered with United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF) to map internet connectivity landscape for schools in 35 countries by the end of 2023 to provide digital learning access to the children.

Centre Sets up Panel to Modify the Charter of DRDO labs; Headed by Prof V Ramagopal Rao

G Satheesh Reddy, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D), and Chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has constituted the five-member committee under the chairmanship of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi director Valipe Ramagopal Rao to review charter of duties of 57 DRDO labs on the basis of current and futuristic defence and battlefield needs.

IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad Launched “Chunauti”, Next Generation Start-up Contest; Foundation stone laid for NIELIT at Muzaffarpur, Bihar

On August 28, 2020, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched next-generation startup Challenge contest “Chunauti” to encourage startups and software products with special focus on Tier-II towns.

India Ranked 72nd on Global List with Average Monthly Wage of Rs 32,800, Switzerland Tops: Picodi.com

i.In accordance with the global ranking of average wages prepared by Picodi.com, India ranked 72nd among 106 countries with an average monthly wage of Rs 32,800 (USD 437). Picodi.com is an international e-commerce platform, headquartered in Poland, provides discount coupons.  
ii.The ranking has been topped by Switzerland, where the average wage converted into rupees amounts to Rs 4,49,000 (USD 5,989). 
iii.On the other hand the average monthly wage of Cuba is the lowest at Rs 2,700 (USD 36).
iv.Among Asian countries, India ranked 10th out of 16.

Noor Inayat Khan(Noor-un-Nissa Inayat Khan or Nora Baker), Britain’s World War II spy, who served in the Special Operations Executive(SOE) became the 1st Indian-origin woman to be honoured with a memorial Blue Plaque at her former family home in London, United Kingdom(UK).

International Day Against Nuclear Tests: 29th August 2020

i.United Nations(UN)’s International Day Against Nuclear Tests is observed annually on 29th August to create awareness and to educate the people about the facts and effects of nuclear weapon test explosions and other nuclear explosions. 
ii.The first International Day against Nuclear Tests was observed on 29th August 2010.
iii.29th August 2020 Marks the International Day Against Nuclear Tests 2020.
iv.The objective of this day is to enhance the need to cease nuclear weapons, to achieve a nuclear weapon free world.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport wins CII-GBC ‘National Energy Leader’ award

On August 28, 2020 The GMR led Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (Hyderabad International Airport) won the ‘National Energy Leader’ and ‘Excellent Energy Efficient Unit’ awards at the 21st National Awards for ‘Excellence in Energy Management’. It was organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Godrej Green Business Centre (GBC).

Formula One Champion Mercedes Lewis Hamilton(British) won the Belgian Grand Prix(GP) 2020 at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium.

Note– This victory is Lewis Hamilton’s 5th win in 7 races this year(2020)

India, Russia declared joint winners of 2020 Online FIDE Chess Olympiad

i.On 30th August, 2020 India and Russia were declared joint winners of the 2020 Online FIDE (International Chess Federation) Chess Olympiad after the final was marred by internet disconnection. This was the first time that FIDE was holding the Olympiad in an online format due to the ongoing Pandemic. i.Initially, Russia were declared winners after two Indian players –  Nihil Sarin and Divya Deshmukh lost out on time in the final due to a disconnection in the server. 
ii.However,India lodged a protest against the controversial decision which was reviewed and FIDE announced Gold Medals for both India and Russia.

International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances 2020: August 30

United Nations(UN)’s International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is annually observed on 30th August to create and raise awareness that enforced disappearance is a crime and it should not be used like a tool to deal with the situations of conflicts. 
ii.The first International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances was observed on 30th August 2011.
ii.The Rome Statute of the International Criminal court and the International Convention of the Protection of All persons from Enforced Disappearance adopted the UNGA resolution 20th December 2006, states that, forced disappearance qualifies as a crime against humanity.

On 30th August 2020, during the monthly radio broadcast programme “Mann ki Baat”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to celebrate the September 2020 as “Poshan Maah” or “Nutrition Month”.

On 31 August, 2020 Former President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee passed away after developing a lung infection at the Army’s Research and Referral Hospital, New Delhi, he was admitted for a Brain Surgery. He had also tested Positive for Coronavirus. 
i.He served as the 13th President of India From 2012-2017. 

i.In 2019, he was awarded India’s Highest Civilian Award, Bharat Ratna.

ii.In 2008, he was conferred with India’s Second Highest Civilian Award, Padma Vibhushan.

iii.Best Parliamentarian Award in 1997 and Best Administrator in India Award in 2011.

Telugu Language Day: August 29

i.Telugu Language Day (Telugu Bhasha Dinotsavam) is celebrated on August 29 every year in Andhra Pradesh(AP). 
ii.The birth anniversary of Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy, a prominent Telugu writer, is celebrated as the day whose contributions, Vyavaharika Bhasha or Vaaduka Bhasha (Colloquial language) is immense. 
iii.Telugu is referred to as ‘The Italian of the East’, as Niccolò de’ Conti, the 16th century Italian explorer found that the Telugu language ends with vowels just like the Italian language.

India’s 1st female cardiologist Dr S. Padmavati passes away

Noted cardiologist, Dr S Padmavati passed away at the age of 103 years due to COVID-19. She was the first female cardiologist of India and was popularly known as ”God Mother of Cardiology”. She was the founder of the National Heart Institute. She was born in Burma (now Myanmar) in 1917, a year before the world was hit by the Spanish Flu pandemic.

 India’s first International Women Trade Centre to be set up in Kerala

Kerala is to set up its first International Women Trade Centre in terms of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals. This is first of its kind in India.

India Sea Plane services to begin from October 31

The Gujarat Government recently announced that the first sea plane services of India is to begin from October 31. October 31 marks the birth anniversary of Sarsar Vallabhai Patel. The first seaplane is to take off from Sabarmati river front to Statue of Unity in Kevadia in Narmada district.
